Surprising but True: How Eating Habits Affect Aging and Youthful Appearance

Though age and genetics play major roles in how people age, certain eating habits can also influence our appearance. In fact, some dietary habits may make us look older, while others can help delay aging. Here’s a look at how certain foods and lifestyle choices might affect our appearance, and tips to maintain a youthful look through nutrition.


1. Skipping Breakfast

Skipping breakfast or eating it too late might make you appear older! A study published in Food & Function in June 2024 shows that skipping breakfast, or eating it late, can accelerate biological aging. Researchers found that people who ate their first meal of the day at 10:26 a.m. had a 25% higher rate of accelerated aging compared to those who ate at 6:14 a.m. in the morning.

2. A Sweet Tooth Speeds Up Aging

Loving sweets may make you age faster! In July 2024, a study published in the JAMA Network Open revealed that higher sugar intake correlates with quicker aging—even a 1-gram increase in sugar could speed up aging. Typical high-sugar snacks include cookies, ice cream, chocolates, candies, cakes, processed snacks, and sweetened dried fruits. When choosing snacks, check the ingredients list: if sugars (like white sugar, brown sugar, high fructose corn syrup, honey, etc.) appear at the top, it indicates high sugar content.

3. Alcohol Consumption

For youthful skin, it’s best to avoid alcohol altogether. In April 2024, researchers from Sichuan University published a study in Addiction showing that any level of alcohol consumption was linked to accelerated biological aging, compared to those who abstained completely. Frequent drinkers, occasional drinkers, and moderate drinkers all showed signs of faster biological aging. The effect was especially significant among women and people under the age of 45.

4. Drinking Too Much Coffee

A team from the Second Hospital of Lanzhou University published findings in April 2024 indicating that excessive coffee consumption may be a “skin-aging accelerator.” Caffeine can constrict blood vessels, limiting blood flow and reducing the skin’s oxygen and nutrient supply, which can lead to faster aging. Additionally, caffeine can interfere with sleep quality, impairing skin repair and regeneration. Coffee additives like sugar and cream may also contribute to skin aging.

5. High Red Meat Intake

Excessive red meat consumption, particularly pork, is linked to a higher risk of skin aging. Red meats like pork are high in saturated fats, which can increase oxidative stress and inflammatory responses—two key factors in skin aging.


Five Dietary Adjustments to Slow Aging

1. Eat Until 80% Full

Reducing daily calorie intake by 12% can enhance muscle and slow down aging, according to a 2023 study in Nature Aging. Eating until you feel about 80% full—a method known as “hara hachi bu”—can help support this calorie reduction.

2. Include Carrots

A 2023 study published in Nature Communications highlights carrots as a food that can help delay aging and improve health. Carrots are rich in β-carotene, a powerful antioxidant, which is also present in orange and yellow fruits like cantaloupe and mango.

3. Add Whole Grains

According to Qin Wen, a nutrition expert from the Chinese CDC, whole grains contain natural antioxidants like phenolic compounds, unsaturated fatty acids, phytosterols, and vitamin E, which help combat free radicals and slow down aging. Common grains include sorghum, oats, millet, quinoa, and buckwheat. Legumes like green peas, chickpeas, and lentils are also excellent sources.

4. Eat Grapes with the Skin

A 2024 study by researchers at Nanjing University’s School of Medicine, published in Biogerontology, showed that resveratrol found in grape skins can effectively counter UV-induced skin aging. Resveratrol is a natural polyphenol with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging properties, making it a valuable addition when eaten with grapes.

5. Enjoy Green Tea Regularly

A study published in The Lancet Regional Health in 2023 found that regularly drinking tea can slow aging, with green tea showing the best results. Drinking 2-3 cups of green tea daily was associated with the most significant anti-aging effects. Green tea is packed with bioactive compounds like polyphenols, purine alkaloids, theanine, and polysaccharides, which may contribute to its anti-aging properties.
